Why care about mental health?

Mental health is a global health crisis.
Mental health is real and affects us all.

Every year 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health problem or illness (MHCC); whereas 5 in 5 can benefit from improved mental health and wellbeing.

Research suggests mental health challenges such as feelings of loneliness, anger, stress, anxiety, guilt, depression, and disconnection to self and community are the root causes of physical illness. Mental ill-health negatively impacts not only individuals, but also has a major effect on families, communities, workplaces, and the health care system.

  • 20% of Canadian youth are living with a mental illness

  • 80% of youth in need do not receive mental health care due to long wait times, cost and stigma

  • 24% of all deaths in 15 to 24 year olds is due to suicide

  • Mental illnesses cost the Canadian health care system an estimated $50 billion per year

  • Canadian businesses lose $6 billion annually through absenteeism and lost productivity

  • Over the next 20 years more than 8.9 million Canadians will be living with a mental illness
